Lots to see and do in Mesa, Arizona and the surrounding area! We’re lucky to be located not far from several urban hubs and the natural desert landscape that surrounds the Valley. Over the years, our family has enjoyed a number of hikes, parks, restaurants, and unique spots that we personally recommend.
Hiking
Brown Mountain
Just a two miles away. Park at the base and walk the 20-minute trail to get a full view of Mesa from the top.
Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch
Next to the library and the fishing lake are a series of ponds, each surrounded by a trail. Pick your route and don’t worry about any elevation changes. The park also has a small observatory that’s free and usually open on Friday and Saturday nights.
Usery Mountain Regional Park
Part of the Tonto National Forest and only a 12-minute drive. There are several trails here, but our go-to routes include the 3-mile hike up the side of the mountain to the Wind Cave and the full 7-mile loop around the entire mountain. A daily or yearly parking pass required!
Parks
Red Mountain Park
We live in a desert, but greenery is never too far away. Drive about six minutes to reach grass lawns, a fishing lake, a playground, basketball and volleyball courts, and even some disc golf stations.
Riverview Park
Farther out, but a great option for kids. Features your usual fare of playgrounds, but this one also has a splash pad and 50-foot climbing tower. The Chicago Cubs hold their spring training here too.
Tempe Beach Park
It’s in a different city, but Tempe is a worthwhile city to venture to. This park is lined along the man-made Tempe Town Lake and includes miles of paved paths and bridges for walking or biking. Lots of concerts are held in this space, and you can also rent out kayaks and paddleboards for some time on the water.
Restaurants
Papa Kelsey’s Pizza & Subs
Within walking distance of our motel! They’re family-owned and have been around since 1992. Great specials and deals on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights.
Carbajal’s Mexican Food
Another family-owned business, and this one is just two miles down Main Street. Stop by for some Sonoran-style Mexican food.
The Monastery Bar & Grill
You get a little bit of everything at The Monastery. There’s food and drinks available in both indoor and outdoor spaces. There are patio areas, a volleyball court, and two stages for live music. Tons of seating and there’s space for dancing too.
Other Attractions
Salt River Tubing
Grab a tube and float down the Salt River! Tube rentals and bus shuttles also available. The 15-minute drive to the river isn’t just for tubing; you can make it a picnic day and relax at the many river recreation areas.
Goldfield Ghost Town
See the historic buildings and shops that take you back into 1890s. The old western town features a museum, a chapel, a train, and a historic gold mine that is open to tours.
Canyon Lake and Cruise
Take a drive into the mountains and stop one of the many lakes that connect with the Salt River. Canyon Lake is an especially popular destination, not just for a great day at the beach, but for the boat rentals and cruises, particularly The Dolly Steamboat.
Arizona Renaissance Festival
If you’re in town between January and March, join the state’s largest celebration of all things medieval. Snack on giant turkey legs, stop by the tomato throwing booth, and take a seat for a jousting tournament. We’re located 20 minutes away from the fair!
